                          Chapter Five











     Anna Maria was not surprised when Paul asked her to have lunch


with him.  In spite of her protests to Sandra, she had been very


much aware of Paul's interest in her, and she had fanned the flames


of his interest as much as possible without being too obvious.


     The Tobacco Company, a trendy but excellent restaurant which


was something of a cornerstone for the revitalization of one of the


oldest parts of the city, was busy as usual, but they were seated


at a table in an out of the way corner where they could talk


freely.


     "I've been wanting to ask if you would have dinner with me,


Anna Maria."


     "I think that would be very nice, Paul."


     "Good.  We can go out, if you like, but I have become a pretty


good cook myself, and I would love to entertain you at my


apartment."


     "That sounds wonderful to me.  I mean, it isn't as if we have


only met.  Sandra is going to be excited about this, you know." 


Anna Maria smiled teasingly at Paul.


     He laughed.  "I know.  Has she been a double agent all this


time?"


     "Well, that might be a little strong.  She's been very cute


about it, I think.  I know she realized we both liked each other


and wondered why we didn't get together."


     "I have to admit that she boosted my confidence quite a bit. 


I was afraid you'd think I was far too old for you to go out with."


     "Well, now you know, don't you?  The truth is that I like


older men.  I much prefer someone your age."


     "And I much prefer YOU."  He paused for a moment and looked


out the window before looking back at her.  "Anna, I don't know


that I'll be able to let you go."


     "What do you mean?"


     "Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself here, but I have to say it


anyway.  I've dated alot, although I know you haven't seen me date


much since you came to work for the firm.  I've known for a long


time what I want in a woman, and I've been waiting until I saw it


in someone.  I see it all in you, Anna.  And unless I'm mistaken


about you, I know I'm going to want to hang on to you."


     "Maybe I'll want that too, Paul.  We'll just have to see,


won't we?"


     "Yes, we will.  So...Friday night?  Seven?  Shall I pick you


up at your house?"


     "Friday night will be fine, but I'll just drive.  You'll be


busy getting things ready for supper.  How shall I dress for you?"


     The words ran through Paul like electric current.  She meant


it just the way she had asked it.  That was the best part.


     "A comfortable dress?  Maybe something in a solid color?  Not


too long."


     "I have just the thing, I think.  What will you cook us?"


     "That will be your surprise.  You'll like it though, I


promise."


     "Somehow, I think I'm going to like it all, Paul.  Very much."


     


     It was a busy week at the firm, and Friday came much more


quickly than either of them expected it to.  Anna Maria had plans


to be with Betty again on Saturday, but she was beginning to wonder


if that was a good idea.  If things went as well with Paul as she


hoped they would, she might not be as free as she thought she would


be for the weekend.  Things surely had a way of happening all at


once sometimes.  Suddenly she had gone for being uninvolved to


having two very exciting, but very different, relationships


beginning simultaneously.  She wondered what Paul would think of


her sex play with Betty.  It was some men's favorite fantasy, she


knew, but then Paul was not your run of the mill man.  It would all


work itself out in time, but Anna didn't want to hurt Betty in the


process.


     "Guess who I have a date with tonight?", she asked Betty on


the phone, just before leaving the house for Pauls.  Better at


least give her a bit of advance warning.


     "Prince Charles?  Oooh, is Diana going to come too?  Can I


take her out?"


     Anna Maria burst out laughing.  "No, silly, not Prince


Charles, but close.  You know Paul Medlin?  In the firm?"


     "Paul?  Sure!  Well, you lucky girl!  Half the girls in


Richmond would give their Volvos to have a date with Paul.  Where


are you going?"


     "We're having dinner at his apartment."


     "Uh oh...sounds like you may be tied up for the weekend."


     "I don't usually let guys tie me up on the first date, Betty,"


Anna Maria replied, a naughty slant to her voice, "but I might find


it hard to say no if he wanted me to stay the night."


     "Yes, I think you might!  And if you decide you want to pass


on our date for Saturday I'll understand.  We can get together any


time, even during the week, so don't let that stop you."


     "You know I really want to see you, don't you?  I really


enjoyed last weekend."


     "I know, Anna.  I really enjoyed it too.  And we'll do it


again, if not tomorrow, then maybe Sunday, and if not Sunday,


Monday.  We'll work it in.  Have fun!"


     "You're so sweet to understand.  Thanks a bunch, Betty."


     "No problem, sweetie.  I hear Paul is hard to forget.  I also


hear he can be into some pretty kinky things, but I know you'll be


okay.  Just don't forget that you can call me if you need someone. 


Okay?"


     "Thanks, Betty, but I'll be okay.  I'm pretty inexperienced,


but kinky might be alot of fun, especially with Paul.  Anyway, I'm


sure I'll be safe, but I'll call you if I need to get away, I


promise."


     Betty's warning would have concerned Anna Maria if it had been


about anyone other than Paul, but Anna Maria trusted him totally. 


Not only had he always been a gentleman around her, but he would


hardly risk doing anything that would interfere with his position


in the firm, and Anna Maria was not a secretarial worker who could


be easily influenced to keep her mouth shut or conveniently let go.


     She put those thoughts behind her as she shut the door to the


house and set her makeup kit in the backseat of her car.  Paul


hadn't said anything about her staying overnight, but it never hurt


to be prepared.  She smiled to herself as she thought about her


purposeful act of taking her makeup but electing not to take a


change of clothes.  There was little question about which she most


wanted to wear.
