They were all beautiful horses, but beauty among horses is much less rare than the poise and breeding that true champions are made of. It was not surprising, therefore, that when the race had been run, the winner had come from this group of three. What WAS surprising to most observers was the events that transpired during the running of this historic event. The smart money was placed on horse number four on the program, Melvin's Lair, an exceptionally strong and spirited animal who seemed to have no match when it came to outright speed. While he was often difficult to control, he was always a joy to watch run. Horse number eight on the program was the most beautiful animal in the field, another headstrong filly called Whisteria. Whisteria had earned her place in the derby by simply running away from her opponents in the previous races in which she had been entered. The third of the standouts was horse number three, an animal whose breeding showed in every fibre of its being. Its markings and shadings were perfect in every way, and while it possessed neither the blinding speed or the indominable spirit of the other two, Stuart's Pride stood head and shoulders above the rest of the field. At the sound of the starting bell, Melvin's Lair lurched hard to the left, driving the jockey into the side of the starting gate and knocking him from his perch. Clinging tightly to the reins, the jockey held on for dear life as the totally out of control speedster drug him wildly behind. Whisteria, whether startled by the events occuring around her, as some later surmised, or whether due to some quirk of fate itself, stumbled going into the first turn, tossing her rider completely out of the saddle and under the pounding hooves of the horse to the right of them. In the midst of all this tragedy and confusion, Stuart's Pride was being held back, reined in tightly by the savvy jockey in his saddle. As the field entered the backstretch and the horses began to settle down some from the excitement of the start, Pride's jockey began giving the horse his head bit by bit, allowing him to gain steadily on the others in a controlled fashion. In a final quarter that would surpass all previous records, Stuart's Pride became the Derby's winner, finishing in what appeared to be an easy six lengths over the next horse. As the somewhat astonished fans began filing from the grandstands, an older gentleman, who had obviously bet on the wrong horse, tossed his tickets in the air and expressed with wisdom and disgust: "One things for damned sure! They ain't never been a horse that won the derby without a jockey in the saddle, much less a- pulling him along behind!" Melanie, my pet, your beauty and spirit are unassailable facts. The question you must answer, not for me, but for yourself is: What path leads to the victory you seek? Master Wade -- Double For Nothing!!
